Still Trending … The Ikat Design

I’ve recently fallen in love with anything that has an ikat print on it … I’m not sure what it is about this type of design; perhaps it is the individuality of each print that I see or the mix of colours that are used, but I absolutely love it!

Ikat Bedspread and Cushions

Ikat (sometimes spelt Ikkat) is a dying technique which is used to create pattern textiles that employs a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dying. It is an age-old process and is thought to have originated from South East Asia … and in Indonesian it means to “tie” or to “bind”. Although originating from S.E. Asia it is used all over the world and can be found in many South American countries, such as Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador through to India, Japan and even Borneo!

Ikat Upholstered Chairs

Like any craft or art, the ikat design varies from country to country – designs can sometimes have ritual and symbolic meanings whilst on the other hand they may have just been developed for trade and export … nevertheless … if you’re looking to add something a little quirky and eye-catching why not find an ikat printed cushion, rug or maybe even some curtains …
